The Challenge

Landmarc recognised that their current Waste Management system was fragmented and required consolidation

Landmarc were using in excess of 15 waste management companies throughout the UK, the main incumbent being Biffa

Preferred solution was to put a national contract in place with a provider who would manage the whole estate, whilst also taking responsibility for collating and providing the waste data

The Approach

Waste in scope:

  • Food waste
  • General waste
  • Biodegradable Kitchen & Canteen Waste
  • Cardboard
  • Glass
  • Wood & metal
  • Plastic

Landmarc had previously carried out a Waste Management but received very few responses.

The winning national bid from this tender was submitted by GPT Waste, a broker who outsource all waste collections to sub-contractors.

The tender was not progressed as Landmarc came to the conclusion that their site volume & waste system data was not accurate enough for suppliers to base tender prices on

P4 proceeded to issue a Request for Information to the top Waste contractors to Landmarc. They provided a 12 month breakdown of the waste systems in place, number of collections & annual spend. This data, along with Landmarc’sAP data, defined the Waste Baseline spend of £780k

P4 were then provided with the previous tender bids and proceeded to meet with the two main bidders – GPT and incumbent Biffa

GPT presented a different approach to Waste Management - they proposed to manage all sub-contractors, implement more efficient waste systems & their own approved contractors where necessary, increase recycling and take full responsibility for waste data reporting

Impressed with this proposal, Landmarc & P4 proceeded to meet with GPT to discuss further which resulted in GPT submitting a new bid

The Results

Procure4 negotiated with GPT further and site audits were carried out which resulted in the final proposal of the following savings:

  • £45k (6%) - like for like
  • £161k (21%) - optimum solution

The Optimum Solution involves:

  • Increasing recycling
  • Further segregation of waste
  • Removing unnecessary containers
  • Replacing general waste containers with recycling containers
  • Training staff to be more efficient with their waste segregation
  • Landmarc chose to proceed with the optimum solution so the next stage was for GPT to audit all sites, implement the changes and re-train the staff
